West Virginia University's focus is on unconventional shale gas and liquid hydrocarbon resources in West Virginia and the northern Appalachian basin—as well as efforts across the globe. WVU provides science-based technical resources to federal and state government, communities, land and mineral estate owners, industry, environmental groups and other stakeholders.
WVU is committed to expanding education, research and outreach on technical aspects of shale gas development. The university’s goal is wise use of our natural resources while protecting our societal and environmental resources.
The WVU unconventional resource initiative is internally funded by WVU. It remains independent, but seeks and utilizes external funding from government, industry and non-governmental organizations.
