Shale gas exploration, production and transmission involves numerous well installations, pipelines and compressor stations, often in close proximity to homes and farms. The public is concerned about how this will affect their air and water—while the industry seeks better, more efficient ways to manage waste streams.

Environmental practices for shale gas are developing rapidly and WVU is assisting by developing improved detection and containment methods to control environmental exposure. We are also developing improved treatment methods so that these wastewaters either can be reused in new well completions or economically treated for release.
